Great vegetables you can grow in containers.
Because of the recent coronavirus crisis, many of us have realized the privilege of walking into a grocery store and having access to a variety of fruits and vegetables. The recent lockdown has meant that some of us have been tempted to grow our own fruits and vegetables. Fortunately, you don’t need a huge yard or sprawling acres to grow your own vegetables. All you need is a container!
Beetroot
These are really great container crops. Sow a few seeds every couple of weeks, starting now until July, and you’ll be harvesting them all through summer. Soak the seeds in warm water for a few hours before sowing to speed up germination. Water during dry spells and harvest once they are the size of golf balls.
Tomatoes
Growing tomatoes in containers is easy and incredibly satisfying. Most tomatoes are happiest in big containers and will need staking. This keeps the heavy fruit from bending and breaking the vines. If you are buying tomato seedlings, look for short and stocky plants that don’t have blossoms yet. Tomatoes do not like to be cold, so place them in full sun and cover them if the temperature dips. They need consistent water with good drainage, too.
Lettuce
Growing your own lettuce (and other salad greens) in containers is easy, fast, and gives you a bang for your gardening buck. They tend to like partial sun, and it is very easy to grow lettuce from seeds. Sow one or two seeds in a pot less than an inch deep, at intervals so they don’t all mature at the same time. You need rich soil that is kept really moist for lettuces to grow well.
Herbs
Kitchen herbs are the easiest edible plants to grow and deserve a spot in any container gardening list. Start off with thyme, chives, mint, sage, parsley, oregano, and rosemary outdoors. Basil and coriander can thrive inside the kitchen. Always choose herbs you enjoy cooking with and keep them by the kitchen or back door so you remember to use them.
