Your teen will be on their own within a few years. Do what you can in order to make them the best possible driver they can be.
Putting a teenager behind the wheel of a car can be a stressful moment in any parent’s life. Teenagers are about three times more likely to be involved in a traffic accident than drivers aged 20 or older, but that doesn’t mean that they will get into an accident. With a little help from their parents, they can hit the road and you’ll know they will be as safe as can be. Here are a few ways you can help your teen become a better driver.
- No Texting and Driving
Distracted driving accounts for 58 percent of all accidents involving a teenager. Phones should be put in the center console to not even tempt the youngin: out of sight, out of mind. And be sure to practice what you preach. Kids learn by example, and they won’t take you seriously if they see you on the phone when you drive. (Also, it’s illegal in most states!) - Limit the Passengers While They Drive
Having other teens in the car can put young drivers at risk due to the distractions and the added peer pressure. Talk to your children and their friends about the rules when your teen is driving and limit the number of passengers they are allowed to have in the car, incrementing it slowly as they prove to be responsible drivers.
