- Ensure your child knows how to swim
Consider signing your child up for swimming lessons for him or her to gain an understanding of how to swim and stay safe in the water. If you have teenagers, think about signing them for a CPR course.
- Cover the drains
Every year, there are multiple reports of children getting their hair or clothing caught in pool drains. Make sure drains are properly covered to avoid injury. Keep a first aid kit by the pool at all times and ensure that there are scissors in the kit to cut away hair or clothing that may get caught in the drain.
- Ensure adult supervision
When there are children near or in the pool, always ensure there is at least one adult to supervise. Even taking your eyes off the children in the pool to read or check your phone can mean that you miss valuable seconds – so make supervising a priority.
- Don’t forget sunscreen
The need for sunscreen is especially great in swimming pools because the reflection of the water acts as a giant mirror, meaning that sunburns can arise that much quicker. Make sure your child is lathered up in sunscreen before heading outside and that it is reapplied after swimming and sweating.
