How to balance work and life as a business owner.
As a business owner, you may wear many hats. Although you may be working to get your business off the ground, it’s important that you maintain a healthy work-life balance to prevent burning out. As a small business owner, it can be easy to fall into the trap of being stuck in ‘work mode’ but it’s important to look after yourself so that your business doesn’t consume you. Here are a few tips on how to switch off as a business owner.
Unplug for an hour
Set aside an hour in the evening to turn off your phone and any other technology where you can truly take some time for yourself without any distractions. Avoid going on social media or checking your emails – just for one hour! Instead, do something you enjoy like reading a book, taking an exercise class or going for a walk in nature. In today’s world, it’s important to achieve tech-life balance, too.
Schedule your day
Although many believe that setting your own hours is a major perk of being a business owner, it can be detrimental to your mental health if not thought about carefully. Don’t forget to take time out for yourself, whether that’s in your lunch break or through a series of small, regular breaks. If you’re not a morning person, push your working schedule into the afternoon and use the morning to kick back and look after yourself.
Build a support network
Running a small business can sometimes be isolating, and that’s not just for those who work alone. Make sure that you regularly connect with other small businesses in the local area so that you network with other like-minded entrepreneurs and build your list of industry contacts. Try to schedule in a meeting at least once a week with a mentor, close friend or relative.
