Ensure swimming during the summer stays a fun activity with these safety tips.
Taking a dip in the nearest swimming pool is a great way for a family to cool off of a hot summer’s day in Texas. However, keeping a few safety precautions in mind can ensure that swimming is a fun activity where no one gets hurt. If your kids are going to be using a swimming pool this season, be sure to follow these safety tips.
Fence It In
If you have your own backyard swimming pool, make sure it’s properly enclosed by a fence at least four feet high with a self-latching gate and no easy access to it. You’ll also want to ensure that no pool furniture is kept alongside the fence that can be used to climb over it.
Sign Your Child Up for Swimming Lessons
Consider signing your child up for swimming lessons for him or her to gain an understanding of how to swim and stay safe in the water. If you have teenagers, think about signing them for a CPR course.
Use Drain Covers
Every year, there are multiple reports of children getting their hair or clothing caught in pool drains. Make sure drains are properly covered to avoid injury. Keep a first aid kit by the pool at all times and ensure that there are scissors in the kit to cut away hair or clothing that may get caught in the drain.
Apply Sunscreen
The need for sunscreen is especially great in swimming pools because the reflection of the water acts as a giant mirror, meaning that sunburns can arise that much quicker. Make sure your child is lathered up in sunscreen before heading outside and that it is reapplied after swimming and sweating.
Supervise
When there are children near or in the pool, always ensure there is at least one adult to supervise. Even taking your eyes off the children in the pool to read or check your phone can mean that you miss valuable seconds – so make supervising a priority.
