How and Why to Do a Digital Detox
We live in an age where everything is incredibly connected. While we always were technologically minded, thanks to the pandemic, we rely more heavily on tech than before. Most of us have two or three devices in the house, from smartphones to laptops to smartwatches and tablets, if not more. We have become accustomed to working, communication, shopping, and living online. With that said, it’s not surprising that many of us have difficulty acquiring a healthy work-life balance and time away from the screen. For you, it might be time to log off.   Reasons for a Digital Detox For many people, being connected and immersed in the digital world is just part of everyday life. However, there are many reasons why you should give up your mobile phone and other devices for a brief time. You might want to enjoy more time connecting with loved ones face to face and reduce the stress that comes along with technology. Constant connectivity can mean we’re always checking work emails and responding to clients, even when we’re supposed to be having downtime. Doing a digital detox may help you establish healthier boundaries when it comes to work and family time.   Another great reason to do a digital detox is that social comparison makes it hard to be content. If you spend time on social media, it’s likely you end up comparing yourself to social media influencers and even friends and family. Most of these social apps are highlight reels, only showing the best parts of someone’s life. We tend to forget that, and wonder why our lives are not perfect. Comparison can be the thief of joy, and detoxing from your social connections can be a good way to be grateful for what you have.   How to Digitally Detox Now that you know there are many reasons why you should log off, here are a few easy ways to get started.
  • Remove distractions – Anything that is not essential should be removed. In essence, that means no alerts, beeps, buzzes, or notifications of any kind. Most emergencies are imagined, so try removing distractions so that you can really focus on what matters to make better use of your time.
  • Ask yourself ‘why’ when picking up your phone – For many of us, it’s a habit. We pick up our phones and look through social media when we’re bored, happy, sad, tired, energetic, inspired, uninspired…the list goes on. We tend to use our phones when we want to be distracted or entertained. Instead of picking up your phone out of instinct, ask yourself why. You may be able to assess your feelings and find a better solution than looking at social media.
  • Be present – Instead of picking up your phone when someone is talking to you, instead listen to what they are saying. Spend more time with your connections and strengthen the bonds there. Take up a hobby and work with your hands. There are so many more hours in the day when you simply put down your phone. Take moments to be present without the use of your phone.
