Why we need to stay hydrated throughout winter.
The cold weather often means we’re reaching for our water bottles less frequently. Although we’re not thirsty and sweating like we were in summer, staying hydrated is just as important over winter.
Water is essential to our health. Not only is it needed for bodily functions, but it’s important for our organs, joints, cognitive function, digestive system, and much more. Without sufficient hydration, our bodies suffer. Failing to stay hydrated can be hazardous to our health, potentially leading to much more serious consequences. Here are just a few reasons why staying hydrated is just as important in winter as it is in the summer:
- It boosts your immune system. The cold, dry air in winter can unexpectedly lead to dehydration. In turn, this can lead to fatigue, making us more susceptible to certain illnesses. When you drink plenty of water, you give your body the fluids it needs to fight off these issues.
- Dehydration is easy to miss. Dehydration is less noticeable in winter. Perspiration tends to turn to water vapor quickly, and along with the extra layers of clothing and drier air, our bodies can dehydrate quickly without us even noticing.
- Staying hydrated helps to maintain weight. The cold weather over winter is often an excuse to eat more and exercise less. When you’re hydrated, your body is far more efficient at breaking down fats and converting them to energy. When you’re dehydrated, your body can stubbornly hold onto fluids, resulting in weight gain.
- It helps you to stay warmer. Your body uses water to help maintain its temperature, whatever the season. Not having sufficient fluids can result in your body temperature dropping dramatically.
As you can see, there are a number of valid reasons why staying hydrated is just as important in the winter as it is the summer. Although we may not feel like sipping on cold water in winter, staying hydrated in winter can be simple. Here are a few ideas to get started:
- Keep a bottle of water with you at all times
- Jazz up your water with slices of cucumber, ginger, strawberries, or lemon
- Warm up with vegetable soups
- Eat your water! Pick up water-rich fruit and vegetables such as bell peppers, broccoli, cucumber, melon, and kiwis
- Sip on hot herbal teas (avoid coffee and black tea (as they are diuretics)
- Pick up a juice instead of alcohol at festive parties. Alcohol can dehydrate you
