Most Common Causes of Homeowners Insurance Claims

By October 25, 2018August 6th, 2024No Comments

Understand what common claims homeowners file.

You can legally own a home without dwelling insurance, but your mortgage lender may require you to carry coverage. At the end of the day, home insurance coverage is a valuable tool for protecting your family and belongings. To help you better protect your home, we thought we would share with you some of the most common claim types in Texas.

Fire

With ovens, stoves, lit candles, electrical systems, fireplaces, electrical plugs, and heaters, it’s no surprise that there is such a large fire risk in each home. Fire can cause a lot of damage to the property and belongings in mere seconds, and they can quickly start when there’s a lack of care or maintenance. Make sure that you take care when cooking, don’t go to bed with a fire still smoldering, use caution with candles, avoid overloading electrical outlets, and test your smoke alarms monthly.

Theft

Thankfully, burglaries are not as common as they once were. Nonetheless, there are still plenty of homes being robbed, even in small towns. If you want to avoid being one of them, you can improve your home’s security features, such as installing motion sensor lights and a security camera system. Always keep interior doors to your garage locked and use your deadbolts.

Natural Disasters

Think back to Hurricane Harvey and the destruction it caused to homeowners, communities, and businesses. Not only was the hurricane devastating, but the bulk of Harvey’s damage in Texas was caused by flooding. Standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood events, and coverage must be purchased separately. For Hurricane Harvey the average flood insurance claim amount was around $80,000. The average claim amount for covered property damage to residential properties, excluding flood, was about $7,600.
