What You Should Do After Being Involved in a Hit-and-Run

Here are some of the steps you should take as a victim of a hit-and-run accident.

An accident is considered a hit-and-run anytime an involved driver flees the scene of the accident.  Unfortunately, these types of accidents tend to unfold very quickly and you might not have time to react.  If you ever find yourself the victim of a hit-and-run, then here are some of the steps you should take to help you handle the situation.

  • Don’t Pursue the Other Driver

While you might be tempted to, it’s important that you do not attempt to chase down the driver that flees the seen of the accident.  In your pursuit, you are more likely to drive recklessly, placing yourself, your passengers, and other innocent parties at risk.  Additionally, the other driver might be dangerous and could react aggressively when they realize you are following them.  Rather than getting involved in a risky pursuit, you should pull off the road and make sure that everyone inside your vehicle is okay.

  • Remember Any Details

After getting into a hit-and-run you will likely feel shaken, overwhelmed, and perhaps even a little angry.  However, it’s important that you calm yourself down and do your best to remember any details about the accident.  For instance, try to remember the color of the car, the state on its license plate, any physical characteristics of the other driver, and so on.  Every detail, no matter how seemingly minor, has the potential to help your case.

  • Call the Police

Even if you feel like you have nothing to report, it’s important that you call the police to the scene of the accident.  At the very least, having an official police report documenting the accident will help you with any insurance claims you might file down the line.  When the police arrive at the scene, recount what happened without assigning blame or admitting fault.  You should let the police determine what happened for themselves.  Additionally, make sure that you get a copy of the police report for insurance purposes.

These are some of the steps you should take after being involved in a hit-and-run accident.  Remember, the best way to cover the damages associated with a hit-and-run is by having the right auto insurance in place.  To find the right policies to meet your needs, contact the experts at Reata Insurance Group.  Our dedicated team is ready to assist you with all your coverage needs today.
