Eat your way to a healthier heart this month!
Many of us know that a healthy diet can prevent heart disease. Not only is heart disease a real threat in this country but it is the leading cause of death for males and females in the west. Professionals say that diet and exercise continue to be the best ways to stay fit and healthy, benefiting the heart and preventing cardiovascular diseases. Since February is National American Heart Month, we thought we’d share a few healthy and affordable foods that are great for your heart and easy to find throughout Texas.
Blueberries
Blueberries are powerhouses of antioxidants, making them a great heart-healthy snack. The antioxidants are known for contributing to lowering blood pressure as well as preventing free radical damage. Make sure you eat these berries fresh since you won’t get the full benefits of eating blueberry flavored products.
Nuts
Just a small (unsalted) handful of nuts can help your heart! Almonds and walnuts are known for lowering bad cholesterol levels and they help to keep your blood sugar in check. What’s more, they can help you stay fuller for longer.
Oats
Whole grains are great for the body, but oats continue to outshine the rest. They help to lower cholesterol levels and help with fiber intake. In essence, they act as a sponge that carries cholesterol out of the body.
Spinach
Easy to find and easy to sneak into meals – Spinach is one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can get. The fiber helps to lower your cholesterol, while the lutein aids your arteries.
Dark Chocolate
This indulgent treat makes the list! The antioxidants found in dark chocolate, particularly procyanidins, help to reduce the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs. However, choose dark chocolate that is at least 70 percent cocoa and keep your portions small!
