Easy ways on how to improve your diet this National Nutrition Month.

Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month? Across Texas, schools, communities, and businesses are getting involved in this month, taking action to improve their nutrition and health. If you’re wondering how you can join in and improve your diet, we can help. We’ve rounded up nutritionist-approved tips on how to eat and live healthier throughout National Nutrition Month and beyond.

Eat More Plants

Aim to cut back on processed foods, opting for whole food plants instead. Increase the volume of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds to provide your body with complete nutrition. Plants contain fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that don’t just keep you full and healthy, but also satisfy your cells needs for quality nutrients. If you can’t buy fresh fruit and vegetables in bulk, don’t worry – frozen does just the trick and saves on your wallet.

Cut the Sodium

Too much sodium can negatively impact the body. Sodium increases blood pressure, which raises the risk of heart disease and stroke. To cut back on your salt intake, avoid processed and pre-packaged food, look for products labelled ‘low sodium,’ and add herbs or fresh lemon juice to meals instead of table salt.

Start the Day Right

One of the biggest culprits of poor eating habits is grabbing something unhealthy in a hurry while heading out the door (or skipping breakfast altogether!). The best way to start the day is to fill up on a fiber-rich breakfast, such as a green smoothie, a bowl of oatmeal, or fruit and yogurt. Try whipping up some overnight oats the night before work so that you can grab the oats to go, helping you save time without sacrificing on nutrition!
