- Blue was the original color. When we think of St. Patrick’s Day, we think of green. Chicago dyes its river green for crying out loud! But it wasn’t always that way. St. Patrick actually used to wear a specific shade of blue that was dubbed “St. Patrick’s blue.” It wasn’t until the late 18th century that the color green was linked to the holiday due to the Irish independence movement.
- The shamrocks are a metaphor. According to Irish legend, St. Patrick used the shamrock to symbolize the Holy Trinity; the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- Patrick was British. Records indicate that St. Patrick was, in fact, not Irish. He was born in either Scotland or Wales to Roman parents.
- It used to be a dry holiday. St. Patrick’s Day used to be an extremely religious holiday. All businesses, including pubs, would close for the day. It wasn’t until 1970 when that it was converted into a national holiday that the stouts poured freely, in true Irish fashion.
- Drunk driving is irresponsible and illegal. While not exclusively a St. Patrick’s Day fact, the point remains. If you drink that night, please use a designated driver, a cab or a ride-sharing service.
